History of Mercor Tecresa’s Smoke Evacuation Department

Shortly after the beginning of the adventure of tecresa® Protección Pasiva S.L. in 1998, a small specific division in charge of smoke evacuation systems was created within the company. At the time, the regulations were different, and our main contracts were in large shopping malls and public spaces tecresa® was in charge of making the corresponding calculations, and the material was purchased from different manufacturers outside our borders.  Our task stopped after installation.

Some works carried out by tecresa® at that times still remain, such as the Gran Casa shopping centre in Zaragoza, the El Boulevard shopping centre in Vitoria, etc…

In 2004, there was a significant change, with the introduction of new regulations: the Technical Building Code (CTE), the Regulation on Fire Safety in Industrial Establishments and finally the UNE EN 23.585 standard which regulates the calculation of these smoke evacuation systems.

The CTE has established the obligation to have smoke evacuation systems in atriums and public spaces, and the Spanish Fire Safety Regulations for Industrial Establishments (RSCIEI) in medium and high-risk industrial warehouses.

These new requirements have meant that the small department of tecresa® grew in the face of the new challenges and needs of the market, with a team made up of more technicians and installers, in order to cover the rising demand.

It was in 2008 that one of our largest suppliers of smoke vents, the Polish group Mercor, decided to buy 100% of tecresa® in order to further develop the sales of its products in Spain and to sell in its own market the variety of fire resistance products that tecresa® was and is still manufacturing in Spain. Shortly afterwards, a new export department was created to expand our area of influence in Latin America, North Africa and the Middle East.

Since then, despite an international and construction crisis, the department has grown with new products and the creation of a new after-sales area, which has gained particular momentum with the implementation of the new RIPCI in 2017, which included the obligation to ensure the maintenance of the smoke evacuation systems in the facilities and more recently, a new line of fire dampers that the mercor® Group manufactures itself in Poland and Ukraine.

At mercor tecresa®, our Smoke Evacuation Systems Department is currently as follows:

  • A Team for the Calculation of smoke evacuation systems, through which we usually collaborate with engineering companies, construction companies and contractors, for the development of the most appropriate smoke evacuation systems for each project. This is an important part of the job because the calculation rules of these systems are heavy.
  • A Department for the Delimitation and Design of the smoke evacuation systems for each project.
  • A Work Execution Team that is responsible at the national level for the implementation of the systems.
  • An After-Sales Area, which covers issues that may happen in the installations already delivered and the mandatory maintenance on the national territory required by the RIPCI.
  • A Department for the Export of Smoke Evacuation Systems internationally.
  • A Team for the Sale of Fire Dampers, with a space where we store and distribute the different types of fire dampers manufactured by our mercor® group.
