The installation of fire protection systems in museums is very complicated and it must be accurated due to the highly sensitive contents it has in order to protect not only the art works but people. The following conditions when installing a complete extinction and protection system must be taken into account:

  • The suitable Extinguishing agent. Certain agents can extinguish the fire, but they can also damage the artwork.
  • Control Temperature.
  • Moisture-Control
  • Fire sectorización
  • People protection
  • A proper maintenance of the facilities.

Passive Fire Protection provides security to people and property, thus ensuring the content and the continent of any building.

– Cable ducts and cable trays

– Sectorization of the different rooms

– Smoke exhaust systems

A museum contains artworks and contains a priceless heritage, a badly chosen extinguishing agent can destroy or damage them irreparably so it is important to discuss about:

– Extinction with gases.

– Extinction with water mist.

These elements should be used only in cases of extreme necessity, to prevent the growth of the fire and contain it until the firefighters come into the building. It is vital for a proper use to train the  staff on it. There are two main elements in manual extinction to take into account:

-Fire extinguishers.

-BIEs (Equipped fire hydrants).
